Exporting, Importing, and Beyond: How to "Go Global" With Your Small Business
Published in Paperback by Adams Media Corporation (September, 1997)
Author: Lawrence W. Tuller
Average review score:

A Very Comprehensive Book about Import / Export
This one of the most comprehensive books about import / export, but it comes only in a pocket book size. It covers from A-to-Z of the import / export procedures, including other related issues like Financing, Distribution and U.S. Customs requirments. It also details role & responsibilities of each party involved. This book focuses primarily on the U.S., but it is also good for importer / exporter in other countries. Highly recommended. It is not only excellent for students or new comers in the import / export areana, but it is also a good desk reference guide.

A good, easy to read introduction. Many helpful hints
This book serves a good, solid introduction to exporting and importing. Any small business or manager planning to "go global" will find useful guidelines, hints, addresses and also proven strategies in this book. It is an easy to read, easy to implement guidbook that will help you use the author's expertise & experience to avoid common mistakes. I highly recommend it for anyone planning to export/import. It is significantly better than other general introduction books and complements more specialized exporting books rather nicely.

Eyes Remade for Wonder: A Lawrence Kushner Reader
Published in Hardcover by Jewish Lights Pub (October, 1998)
Author: Lawrence Kushner
Average review score:

WITH THE MIND'S EYES
Revelation is like a dream where nothing is without meaning, yet everything is taken from images seemingly incongruous, disconnected among themselves. As in facing a mosaique with the pieces still spread in a casual manner, so man must face the mysteries of faith: with confidence and constance, devotion and awareness. I believe this is one of Kushner's messages: the author is surely one of the masters of "liberal" Judaism, and he hands out to his readers this precious anthology. In a delicate balance between tradition and modernism, between common sense and the respect for values, Rabbi Kushner presents a model of contemporaneous approach to Judaism, where the need for divulging and integration in society does not mean relinquishing the depths of meditation on man's and the world's great themes. "Close your eyes and listen. This is the voice of your Self."

Kushner makes you aware of the sacred things in your life.
I had never read anything by Lawrence Kushner before, but had heard some of his commentaries on National Public Radio. Recently a friend gave me this book as a birthday present.

What an absolute pleasure it has been to read! Each essay is usually only a few pages long so it is an easy book to find time to read.

He is a great writer, with a wonderful sense of humor, but he delivers some amazingly creative insight and makes you look at your world and what you believe in in a completely fresh new way.

I would highly recommend this book since it is a sampler of his best writings, with a mix of new and previously published material. You will not be disappointed, this is a wonderful read and a great gift.

Facilitating Posttraumatic Growth: A Clinician's Guide (Personality and Clinical Psychology Series)
Published in Hardcover by Lawrence Erlbaum Assoc (August, 1999)
Authors: Lawrence G. Calhoun and Richard G. Tedeschi
Average review score:

An Excellent Source
This is an excellent source not only for clinical workers, but also for nonprofessionals interested in how to help others, and perhaps themselves, after a trauma. Easy to read, full of really good suggestions, and it is a steal at the price!

Hope After Trauma
Calhoun and Tedeschi, psychologists for some years have been studying and writing about posttraumatic growth, offer an excellent source for clinicians and for laypersons too. The book focuses on how some people who struggle with trauma can grow and develop in sometimes unexpected ways. In this book, the authors suggest ways by which the counselor can enhance the chances that clients, who have experienced major life crises, can grow from their difficult struggles.
The volume is not too long,it is full of helpful ideas, and it is written in a clear and engaging style.

Far Rockaway of the Heart
Published in Hardcover by DIANE Publishing Co (January, 1997)
Author: Lawrence Ferlinghetti
Average review score:

Great Bohemian Poetry
This is a great book for exploring the Bohemian poetry movement in the U.S. (namely, San Francisco). Contains the poem, "Autobiography," in which Ferlinghetti misidentifies Mount Rushmore as existing in North Dakota--but as I met him recently at a reading at the U of Minnesota, he was cool about it--knew exactly what I was talking about. . .so maybe he has learned a little since the time he wrote it!

GREAT!
A Far Rockaway of the Heart is Ferlinghetti's most recent anthology of poetry, and it's one of his best. With more than one hundred poems, it's also packed full of passion. I think that after many years of searching, Ferlinghetti finally found his true voice. These poems are sometimes funny, sometimes painful, but always beautifully created and full of life.

Makes Reading chest x-rays fun
This book is very similar to Dubins(EKG's). It makes the reader an active participant in the reading. The book is do-able. It has lots of examples and I was able to get through it in a less than a week. I am much more comfortable reading chest x-rays after reading this book. I only wish there were more books like this in radiology.

Fighting Fascism in Europe: The World War II Letters of an American Veteran of the Spanish Civil War (World War II--The Global, Human, and Ethical Dimension, 1)
Published in Hardcover by Fordham University Press (March, 2003)
Authors: Lawrence Cane, Judy Barrett Litoff, David C. Smith, and David E. Cane
Average review score:

An excellent book
this book is sensitively written and full of fascinating details, which bring the history alive.

A veteran's view
This book kept my interest cover to cover. Lawrence Cane is obviously the epitome of a soldier and family man, the essense of the American service man in W.W. 2. From basic training thru the occupation of Germany,he was a man who had not only to fight for his place in the war ,but then to fight the war from the first wave to hit the beach on Normandy,to the liberation of the concentration camps, to time spent in the rebuilding of Germany in Eisleben.

The Films of Katharine Hepburn
Published in Paperback by Citadel Pr (July, 1990)
Authors: Homer Dickens and Lawrence J. Quirk
Average review score:

Mahvelous Companion Volume to your Hepburn Film Collection
What I most appreciate about this particular volume as a reference book on the film career of Katharine Hepburn is that it is richly illustrated with both professional and candid photographs, provides a complete list of the cast and crew for each of her films, and extensive excerpts from contemporary reviews. "The Films of Katharine Hepburn" is a wonderful companion volume to my almost complete tape collection of Katharine Hepburn films (Hey! I even tracked down "The Iron Petticoat"!).

The introductory "Rebellious Lady: A Biographical Capsule" is only two-dozen pages long but it covers Hepburn's professional career in a complete but concise manner. The photographs included in the essay are the best collection of Hepburn shots you are likely to find, including: a rare shot of Hepburn with her husband, FDR and her gibbon monkey Amos. There is also a watercolor of Hepburn by Ginger Rogers, a bust by Robert McKnight, Alexander Brooks famous 1938 painting, and even Hepburn's first appearance with Spencer Tracy...in the 1938 Mickey Mouse cartoon "Mother Goose Goes Hollywood" (he is one of the three men in a tub along with Charles Laughton and Freddie Bartholomew and she is Little Bo Peep, who has lost her sheep and doesn't know where to find them... "rheally I don't.")

The main portion of the volume is just what the title says, Hepburn's films. For each film Dickens provides the cast, credits, a synopsis, commentary from the "Critic's Circle," and notes on the film, along with at least a half-dozen photographs. The synopsis tend to run towards the short side, but that just underscores that this is a supplementary text and is not intended to substitute for the films. The excerpts from the reviews, which focus specifically on Hepburn for the most part, are the most fascinating part of the volume. In keeping with this you find that even in his own notes Dickens tends to use the words of others--Hepburn, her co-stars, her director--to provide insights into the film and her performance.

Dickens' book ends with a stage chronicle of Hepburn's career, a gallery of Hepburn in each of her film roles, and a list of not only Hepburn's Oscar nominations but her competition for Best Actress each year as well. This format serves Dickens well, not only in this volume but in the other ones he has produced.

The Films of Ronald Colman
Published in Paperback by Lyle Stuart (November, 1979)
Author: Lawrence J. Quirk
Average review score:

Delightful biography with nearly 400 photographs
Citadel film books are famous for their complete filmography with synopsis and reviews and this is one of their best volumes. Ronald Colman was a worthy subject: He was the archetypal english gentleman, and when he died he was one of those rare public figures of which little but good could be said.

Born in 1891 in Richmond from a cultivated background, he initially wanted to become an engineer. But his father died suddenly when he was only 16 and he had to leave school and get a job as clerk with the british steamship company, where he stayed for 5 years and helped support his mother and his sisters. He was an avid reader and also took part in amateur theatricals. He also joined the London Scotts Regionals: they were mobilized in 1914 and he took part with his unit in the first battle of Ypres: Nights in the open field, his clothes lice-ridden, inadequate nutrition and the shelling was endless. At Messines, his leg was hit by a shrapnel. He was decorated for valor and mustered out. This experience made a life-long pacifist out of him and must have influenced his performances in THE DARK ANGEL, RANDOM HARVEST and LOST HORIZON. "I loathe war. I'm inclined to be bitter about the politics of munitions and real estate which are the reasons for war" he once said. An uncle at the foreign office promised to secure him a consulate post, but this time he opted for the stage.

His performance in DAMAGED GOODS became a success because of its scandalous subject: He played a syphilic who came to the doctor for advice. He was discovered by a british film pioneer, sadly, his early films were destroyed during the 1941 London Blitz. In the early twenties, he tried to make a career in New York, but often doors were shut in his face. When he played supporting parts on Broadway, he was discovered again, and played Lillian Gish's leading man in THE WHITE SISTER. He became one of the most popular Hollywood stars of the twenties, and was considered as equal to Douglas Fairbanks in the swashbuckler genre. He was also hilarious in comedies like KIKI, and touching in ultra-romantic dramas like THE DARK ANGEL where he played a blinded war veteran, one of his famous self-sacrificial roles. He and Vilma Banky became a famous screen couple.

Sound films profited from his magnificent, finely modulated voice. After his split with Sam Goldwyn (Please read my comment on the Colman biography by R. Dixon Smith for the details) he started a successful career as free-lancer, and gave some of the finest performances on screen in A TALE OF TWO CITIES, THE PRISONER OF ZENDA and THE LIGHT THAT FAILED (as blind painter). Other films include THE TALK OF THE TOWN and the unforgettable amnesia drama RANDOM HARVEST. He won an oscar for his brilliant portrayal of a psychotic actor in A DOUBLE LIFE and made the witty quiz-show-comedy CHAMPAGNE FOR CAESAR.

His first marriage dragged for 15 alienated bitter years. His wife embarrassed him by showing up on sets and berating him in front of others. But bis second marriage, to actress Benita Hume was one of the happiest in Hollywood, and brought him, at the age of 53 his only daughter, who memorialized him lovingly in a biography. Lawrence Quirk's excellent biography will hopefully contribute to the rediscovery of a wonderful actor who deserves to be remembered as one of the greatest stars.

Fabulous book for collector or lover of older era films.
This is a collector book for anyone interested in movies from the silent era through the 40's-50's. This book represents a sampling of Ronald Colman's career, I believe it, also, represents a value of morality, non offensive movies, when movies meant something and were movies with a real story, touching, moving. This book has many numerous black and white photos of Colman's films and pictures of support actors/actresses and leading ladies. A real collector's item.

Forgotten Empress: The Empress of Ireland Story
Published in Hardcover by Goose Lane Editions (17 November, 1998)
Author: David Zeni
Average review score:

Forgotten Empress Found Again
Mr. Zeni has somehow reached into the murky depths of the St. Lawrence River and retrieved the details of the sinking of the Empress of Ireland. Bringing out many small details that were never mentioned in earlier works, David Zeni does so with a style that keeps one reading on page after page. A truly delightful book to read, on a subject seldom written about. If you collect works on shipwrecks or great ocean liners, this is a must for your collection.

TITANIC LIKE DISASTER IS AN EXCELLENT READ
THE LOSS OF THE EMPRESS OF IRELAND HAS ALWAYS BEEN OVERLOOKED. IT WAS NEVER THE MOST FASHIONABLE SHIP, BUT IT WAS A FASHIONABLE SHIP. IT DID NOT CARRY " THE " ELITE, BUT IT CARRIED SOME ELITE. THE HORROR OF THE SINKING CAN ONCE AGAIN BE SEEN THROUGH THE PASSENGERS EYES. AN ABSOLUTE MUST FOR SHIPWRECK LOVERS.

The Gathering at Big Sur
Published in Paperback by Virtualbookworm.com Publishing (January, 2003)
Author: Lawrence McGuire
Average review score:

Radical Feminism From an Unlikely Source
Mr. McGuire has written a remarkable story in the voice of a 23 year old woman, Lara. I commend him on his ability to reproduce, in a convincing and subtle way, Lara's thoughts and feelings. Lara is a bit immature, like many young American women (and men!), but she is also strong willed enough to take control of her life when it is necessary for her to do so. This book raises many questions about the prevelance of sexism in our culture, but it does so in the midst of a highly crafted narrative. Highly recommended! Being from California I recognized many of the settings of this story, which are described just enough, but not too much.

Interesting and Exciting
I read McGuire's first book, The Great American Wagon Road, and thought it was interesting but not very exciting. His sequel, The Gathering at Big Sur, is interesting and exciting. It's also very radical. The main characters are the same as in the previous book, but the secondary characters are in some ways more vivid and unforgettable. A great plot also. I'm looking forward to book 3. I've never been to a rainbow gathering, but after reading this maybe i'll go and check one out.
